Summer's Back!

One of the fellow voyagers we met in Finike marina this winter used a term for all of the live aboard sailors hiding out from winter storms and rain.  “We’re all climate refugees” he said with a smirk as he and I both recognize that our struggle to stay one step ahead of winter has little in common with the struggle of refugees fleeing war.  That said, he’s kind of right and we’ve found ourselves using the term more and more.

Winters suck.  They suck everywhere.  We don’t know if there really is a difference between a wet cold and a dry cold but we do know that we don’t care – either way it’s cold.  We’re done with winters – even the balmy 10° C of Finike marina.  The goods news is that summer is here in the Med and we’re back out sailing.  We’re heading North along the Turkish coast taking our time and enjoying the fantastic sunshine and the occasional swim.

As we begin to formulate more concrete plans for the next little while we’ll try to provide updates.  Until then, we’ll be soaking up the sun and salt water and making use of our newest toy/transportation.

  1. Winters suck? Not for us: it has been a GREAT ski season here in Whistler! Different strokes for different folks.

Enjoy your Spring/Summer cruising (We're getting Pelagia ready for a cruise to the Central BC coast).

    1. True - skiing is about the only thing that makes winter bearable... Glad to hear that this winter was better than the last 2 for snow.

  2. Hello , we are the SV ALYTES and we just arrived in Turkey, Marmaris. We were also shocked by the cold temperatures here. In February we were in Sri Lanka and then hit of to Djibouti, Sudan and Suez. The further north we came, the more warm clothes we had to get out of our storage. We were suddenly confrontated with 13°C in Marmaris in the first nights. brrrrrr! But finally the summer starts in Marmaris and is getting warmer. But it would be so much better to be back in places where it is always warm. Just our daughter Mina (10 years old) wants to go back to Germany to have some snow and cold days. Well, kids... Our journey around the world probably ends here in the Med. But we are still some days in Marmaris and around. So if you are around, just give us a short notice. Maybe we make a nice picknic with the kids playing together? : Would be great to meet you. Our blog: alytes.de Mail to: heide@alytes.de Greets, Heide, Fritze and Mina

    1. Thanks for reaching out. We left Marmaris around April 30 and are now in Arki Greece. We plan to head southwest more or less through the Cyclades so perhaps our paths will cross. Reach out and we can see about meeting up. We plan to head to Malta and further west as of June...
